Kalmonsäie reviews

...about Kalmonsäie:

"I’ve also been listening a helluva lot to the dark pagan excellence of KALMONSÄIE by Finnish trio Tervahäät, whose intriguing combination of heavy guitars, massed percussion, archaic stringed instruments and a strong male voiced chorale presents listeners at all times with a hugely rich music of occasionally atavistic intensity. Cough it up, there! Here avant-garde sound FX vigorously intrude into frankly clichéd guitar chord sequences, there monkish choirs from the very edge of Christendom accompany themselves with whips and chains, elsewhere great tuneless chants are got up with almost comically earnest fervour ... KALMONSÄIE tramples current musical boundaries with obvious delight and effortlessness, its removed, icy clarity resounds with an extreme, almost fjordal stillness."
- Julian Cope / Head Heritage Drudion

"Opening with chanted voice, the second album from Finnish band Tervahaat is a collection of cold ambient soundscapes that speak of frozen lands, ritual and Finnish mysticism. Reminding me of Stone Breath in their atmosphere, the seven tracks use primitive percussion, strings and drones to summon old Gods, leading the listener deep into the forest, trudging through endless snow in search of ancient wisdom. Throughout the music is beautifully judged, never overwhelming, the sounds carefully blended, allowing the essence of the song to shine through.. ... Filled with longing, the melodies will entwine around you, leaving you shattered long after the sound has faded revealing a beauty so rare that it seems to come from the land itself."
- Terrascope / Simon Lewis

"This past October, Tervahäät returned with Kalmonsäie, a beautifully packaged six-panel digipak, which also came with a new face for the project. Shedding their previous hyperabstraction, the duo of Antero Kaarna and Ilmari Akkanen have added a new layer of structure to their previously amorphous project which, though taking away from the group's initial mystique, gives them more space to grow. Utilizing primitive tribal percussion and rhythmic bass lines, Kalmonsäie manifests itself as a completely different beast, highlighting this duo's songwriting talent. Tonally, we find a distinction between the often harsh, distorted instrumentation and rich, crystal clear vocal recordings (save the black metal inspired "Lumelleluvattu"). The already tinny nature of the oft-used banjo is suddenly dragged through the most glorious bed of glass dust and counteracts the "perfect" feel of the voice. ... Tervahäät is one of those hidden gems in neofolk which will, without a doubt in my mind, pose as an immediate challenge to the casual listener, but closer listening unveils infinite depth, perfectionism, and reverence."
- The Inarguable / Jon Rosenthal

"They are here again. Wandering troubadours Antero Kaarna and Ilmari Riimu shaked the Finnish (neo)folk territories with their shapeless but oddly hypnotizing debut album a couple years ago, and Kalmonsäie is another walk into the old Finnish landscapes and mindscapes. This time their approach is a bit more concrete, and chants, percussions and occasional electric guitars give a few guidelines to a listener to follow their path. ... The vocals steal the main part on Kalmonsäie. A cappella Marrasvirsi (A November Hymn) starts the album daringly but oh so touchingly, and also the last song Saattaja (Pallbearer) and its few lyric lines flatten your mind splendidly. ...Kalmonsäie is – as the debut was – an honest and original portrait of a darker side of a Finnish mind."
- Kaleidoscope / Antti Klemi

- Nonpop / Michael We

Second album of  Tervahäät titled "Kalmonsäie" will be released in September, and the third album titled "Patria" will be released on Finnish independence day 6th of December.

Kalmonsäie will continue on the path of the self-titled album. Freezing and eerie avantgarde folk and ambient soundscapes are brought forth with the aid of primitive ritualistic percussions and home-made instruments. On this album the unique wintry sound of Tervahäät collides with solemn and noble chants, resulting in singular aural opus of esoteric Finnish mysticism.

With Patria Tervahäät takes a leap towards traditional neofolk. Somber songs are based on warm vocals, determined acoustic guitarwork, and samples of Finnish classical composers. About half of the lyrics of the songs are borrowed from Finnish poets and writers who also loved our homeland each in their own specific ways. Patria is a concept album of our fatherland Finland seen through the eyes of the duo Tervahäät.

When typing this shortish piece of info, Kalmonsäie is on the skillful hands in the stage of final mastering (you can find the sample songs from Kalmonsäie from the Anima Arctica Radio), last pieces of Patria are finding their places, and the fourth album - under a working title Taival - is steadily taking its form.
